ABOUT AVIV TATARKSKY
Aviv Tatarsky lives in Jerusalem, a city which is imbued with spirituality, solidarity, violence and oppression. He has been practicing Japanese body arts and Vipassana meditation for 30 years and is a Dharma Facilitator for the Israeli dharma foundation Tovana. His practice of activism, martial arts and dharma came together in 2009 when he co-founded Israeli Engaged Dharma a group of practitioners (and non-practitioners) who engage in solidarity action with Palestinian communities as part of and guided by their spiritual practice. The group aims to allow Israeli practitioners to become exposed to the reality of life under occupation and encourage those who wish to to engage in joint action and resistance. The long years of Israeli-Palestinian action allow the cultivation of mutual care, understanding, commitment and friendships.
Since 2012 Aviv has been working as a researcher for the Israeli NGO Ir Amim (City of Peoples) which challenges Israeli policies in ocuupied East Jerusalem and works to realize the vision of a shared and equitable city as part of ending the occupation.
Since October settler and soldier violence against Palestinian communities has dramatically risen and this has been the main focus of Aviv's action both at work in Jerusalem and with his Engaged Dharma and Palestinian partners in the West Bank. He also participates in local actions to stop the devastation of Gaza but these have been painfully marginal.
